I am very new to this game, and my only question is...

Is there a way to turn off the headliner pop up windows? It's hard for me to navigate the site. Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if the answer is that there is no way to turn the headliners off

Yes you can turn that off if you remove the addware or spyware thats obvious installed on your computer.
The game itself doesn't open popups.

This software does properly do a better job.

But for the first try Spybot, I use it as well.

You might also just use another browser than Internet Explorer for the future e.g. Firefox.
It doesn't install Addware and so it doesn't open popups.

I use Internet Explorer only for testing perposes.

I'll think about reconstructiong the headlines with Ajax. To stop popups from Adware that is installed on the users computer.
We'll see when I get to it.
